Tools are often the most efficient and effective shortcuts you can take when it comes to finding keywords that bring in traffic to your videos. In this post I will share my Top 10 tools for researching YouTube topics and keywords.
These tools enable you to:
- Choose the best keywords based on monthly searches and more
- Learn more about your competition
- Create a video content calendar based around keyword research results
- Make your videos easier to find in Google, YouTube and other Social Media platform search engines
Let’s take a look now at the best tools for researching YouTube topics and keywords.
Google Trends (free)

When analysing the search results, be careful to exclude phrases that are irrelevant to your niche. Not all of the phrases your search returns will relevant to your topic, so you don’t want your decisions to be based on figures which do not reflect the actual searches for your niche.
You can also return location specific results. All you need to do is to click on the ‘Worldwide’ tab, scroll down and you will find the country of your choice. Your target audience determines the country of your choice. You could target growing economies or French-speaking countries alone, for example. Who knows, you may also discover some markets that you never thought would be viable to which you to market your products or services!
Google AdWords Keyword Planner (free)
Previously, YouTube had its own keyword research tool, but it is no longer available. YouTube now recommends that you use their free AdWords tool for keyword research, which is one of the most commonly used tools for researching YouTube topics and keywords.
Go to the Keyword planner tool at https://adwords.google.com/intl/en_au/home/tools/keyword-planner/? and scroll down the page to find the “Start using keyword planner” link.
Tips for finding good keywords:
- Look for keywords that are low in competition but high in average monthly searches. Keywords with “Low” competition may not be searched as often as “High” and consequently may not have many businesses bidding for them for ads. The ad bids are not relevant for you as you are not creating ads here, but it’s an important bit of info to understand how competitive the keyword phrase is.
- Understand the value of long tail keywords. Long-tail keywords are longer and more specific keyword phrases that people are more likely to search for when they’re using voice search and when they are looking for something very specific. For example, let’s use social media marketing as the keyword phrase. The chances are that your videos with the keywords “social media marketing” may never appear near the top of an organic search in Google or YouTube because there’s way too much competition. But if you create a video targeting the topic and keywords of “how to create a Facebook page for business” or “5 Facebook templates for business“ then keywords then you are going to reach more targeted consumers who are looking for information and products that are specific to their needs.
